Adapted Musical Chairs: Printable Protocol and Chair Picture Cards

Musical chairs is a classic that almost everyone recognizes, and this adapted version makes it accessible for everyone in the room, including wheelchair users, those with low mobility, and participants with sensory needs. No elimination stress, no safety concerns, just movement, music, laughter, and connection.

This printable set includes 9 colorful chair picture cards and a full therapeutic protocol so you can run the activity with confidence and document it with purpose.

What's Included:

  • 9 printable chair picture cards in a variety of styles (folding chair, office chair, armchair, director's chair, and more)
  • Full therapeutic activity protocol including goal, supplies, step-by-step instructions, discussion questions, and adaptations
  • Best if laminated for durability and repeated use

How to Play: Set the chair picture cards on the floor in a circle or on tables for an upper-body reach version. When the music plays, participants move around the circle by walking, wheeling, or with staff assistance. When the music stops, everyone finds a chair picture to land on. One card is removed each round. Play as many rounds as your group enjoys.

Built-In Adaptations:

  • Wheelchair users: staff or peers assist with movement between spaces
  • Low mobility: participants tap, clap, or point to the next picture instead of moving
  • Sensory needs: adjust volume and use familiar or calming music
  • Social adaptation: pair wheelchair users with ambulatory participants to move together and share a picture space

Why This Works: It hits movement, social interaction, and mood all in one activity. The familiar format means minimal explanation, and the adaptations mean nobody has to sit it out.

Every activity includes a therapeutic protocol with: Goals, step-by-step instructions, discussion questions, and adaptations for mixed ability levels. Designed by a Recreation Activity Director with experience in long-term care with individuals with disabilities. Laura's motto is there is always a way to adapt.
