Roll a Story Printable Storytelling Activity Collection

Turn a simple roll of the die into a brand-new story.

Roll a Story is a flexible creative-writing and storytelling activity designed for individual participants, partners, or groups. Players roll one die at a time to select a character, a problem, and a setting. They record the three results and use them as the foundation for an original story.

Stories may be written, dictated, told aloud, illustrated, or created collaboratively. This makes the activity useful for a wide range of ages, writing abilities, and group settings.

How to Use It

Roll one die for the character, record the result, then repeat the process for the problem and setting. Participants then create a story using the three selected prompts.

The pages can be:

  • Printed as regular worksheets
  • Laminated separately for dry-erase use
  • Laminated back-to-back, with the prompt board on one side and the matching writing page on the other
  • Used with plain paper or the included generic writing sheets

Flexible for Different Participants

Participants may:

  • Write independently
  • Dictate while another person records the story
  • Work with a partner
  • Build one story together as a group
  • Tell the story aloud instead of writing
  • Add illustrations
  • Share their finished stories with the group

This activity works well for classrooms, homeschool programs, libraries, senior living communities, recreation programs, creative-writing groups, family gatherings, and intergenerational activities.

Simple to facilitate, easy to reuse, and different every time it is played.
